It is not uncommon for a washing machine door to not open or close. This can either be a fault or a function of the machine.
Listed below are the 4 most common reasons for a washing machine door being jammed. There are also the quick fixes to help you return your washing machine back to normal functionality.
- The child lock has been activated
Clothes caught between the door and the housing
The washing machine drum is overloaded
There is a fault with the door lock
1. The child lock has been activated
If the washing machine has a child lock function, this is often the reason for a door not opening. You need to deactivate the child lock. Usually this involves holding down the 'start' button or a combination of other buttons for 3-5 seconds (buttons are usually marked with a key symbol and CL, or the words 'child lock' or hold/press for 3 seconds).
2. Clothes caught between the door and the housing
Clothes getting caught between the door and the housing can also stop a door opening or closing properly. Always ensure there are no clothes stuck in the door housing.
3. The washing machine drum is overloaded
Overloading your washing machine drum can also prevent the door from being closed properly. You may need to take some clothes out of the drum prior to starting a programme (maximum weight for a wash is usually marked in the User Manual or on the washing machine itself).
4. There is a fault with the door lock
If the other fixes do not work and you still have trouble opening or closing your washing machine door, then this may indicate a fault with the door latch or door lock. If the lock does not engage with the latch correctly, then you will probably not be able to start a wash programme. This issue needs to be fixed by a qualified repair engineer.
