All washing machines make low level noises during their wash programmes. This is completely normal.  Some loud noises may indicate there is an issue with the washing machine and these need to be resolved quickly.

NB - before you attempt any work, please check our safety guide.

If you hear strange or loud noises such as squealing, banging, knocking, screeching, grinding, bumping, scratching, or rumbling then there could be a fault with your machine. Watch this video from Bosch https://youtu.be/Za_UmADAABs My washing machine is making strange noises or follow these 5 simple steps for resolving things quickly and easily.

1. Is the appliance standing on a suitable surface?

2. Have you removed the transportation bolts?

3. Have you levelled your machine?

4. Ensure your load is balanced.

5. Clean the drain pump.

1. Is the appliance standing on a suitable surface?

If your machine vibrates and moves across the floor, it might be because it is sitting on the wrong surface. Wooden floors are not ideal. Try installing your machine on a water-resistant wooden board (at least 30mm thick) that has been screwed into the floor.  If possible place your machine on a hard surface and in a corner to stop it moving.

2. Have you removed the transportation bolts?

Check that the transportation bolts have been removed from the back of your washing machine. If the machine is new or you have always had this problem, then this could be the issue. Use a spanner to remove the transportation bolts on the back of the machine and everything should work fine.

3. Have you levelled your machine?

Washing machines that are not balanced can result in loud thumping or knocking sounds, especially when operating at high speeds. Check to see that the machine does not rock backwards and forwards. If it does then level using the adjustable feet. Best to use a spirit level to check everything is straight.

4. Ensure your load is balanced.

Heavy items or too many items in the wash can throw it off balance. Adding towels to the wash can even things out (make sure they are the right colour for the wash!). Also don't overfill the drum.

5. Clean the drain pump.

A dirty or blocked pump can also cause strange noises. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and unblock and clean the pump. This can usually be accessed through a panel on the front of the machine. When you unscrew the cover to access the pump, water may pour out so be prepared!
